Kissing Spine – also known as overriding dorsal spinous processes – can develop due to several contributing factors. Common causes include poor saddle fit, improper training, and posture issues that allow the horse to move with its head elevated, back hollow, and core muscles disengaged. This condition can be very painful for the horse. Early signs may include sensitivity when grooming, particularly around the back, dipping or flinching when the saddle is placed, and resistance during mounting and riding. In advanced cases, the vertebrae may even fuse. However, early diagnosis and proactive management can make a significant difference in the horse’s comfort and mobility.
How Equissage Can Help
While Equissage is not a cure for kissing Spine, it can play a valuable role in managing the condition. The system helps relax the muscles along the spine, reducing tension and inflammation- especially in areas where the vertebrae may be making contact. For best results, use the Edge Hand Unit directly along the horse’s back to target affected areas, in combination with the Edge Back Pad. When possible, we recommend performing two therapy sessions per day to support ongoing muscle relaxation and improved circulation.

Kissing spine occurs when the dorsal spinous processes of the vertebrae are too close together or touch, causing pain and reduced mobility. This image highlights the affected area, where the bones are impinging on each other.

Targeted therapy for kissing spine using the Equissage EDGE hand-held unit to help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and support spinal comfort.
