Stallions will follow the conformation and phenotype of their breed, but within that standard, the presence of hormones such as testosterone may give stallions a thicker, "cresty" neck as well as a somewhat more muscular physique as compared to female horses. This extra weight formed in the neck increases the concussion force to the fore limbs and predisposes stallions to forelimb strains, sprains, fractures and soft tissue pathologies.
Temperament varies widely based on genetics, and training, but because of their instincts as herd animals, they may be prone to aggressive behaviour, and thus require careful management by knowledgeable handlers. However with proper training and management, stallions are effective equine athletes at the highest levels of all equestrian disciplines. As with all horses, diet and exercise are keys to managing a stallion’s weight, during and post breeding season.
Body condition is important for the health, longevity, and breeding performance of stallions. An obese stallion or one that is carrying an injury is less likely to have a robust libido and more likely to develop health problems. An underweight stallion may not have the energy and endurance to hold up through the breeding season. It is vitally important to maintain fitness throughout the breeding season to maintain the horses stamina, muscular strength and fertility.
With a basic understanding of equine biomechanics and physiology, the importance of muscle health is critical to performance and longevity.
