Broodmares

Broodmares require specific care and nutrition to ensure that they and their foals are healthy.

Mares can be used for riding or driving during most of their pregnancy. It is also healthy for them to have only moderate exercise especially when they become heavy in foal. During the last 3 to 4 months of gestation, rapid growth of the fetus increases the pregnant mare's nutritional requirements. Energy requirements during these last few months and during the first few months of lactation are similar to those of a horse in full training. Throughout the gestation period the body undergoes enormous changes to accommodate the foal weight and size. It is of value to continue exercises to maintain the strength of the musculoskeletal system to assist with birthing and rehabilitation post birth.
